Burning the illegal ivory in Kenya

I know that is illegal to hunt elephants, these beautiful giant animals, because of many reasons. The first reason is that these creatures are no more than 500.000 today in Africa. This is not too much, but it is still good. My problem is why would you burn tones of this precious ivory, even if it is illegal. If it was confiscated from these bad people who kill these innocent beautiful animals then why would you burn it? We are talking here about 5 tones of ivory which was burnt in Kenya in 2011 in the presence of many important persons like His Excellency Mwai Kibaki, the President of Kenya and many other officials. I understand that they wanted to draw World’s attention to this, but why would you burn such a precious ivory? I think you have to be really stupid to do that…
They should have found another way to draw World’s attention to this and use this ivory to make nice statues, works of art, sell them and help the economy of this beautiful country. But they were stupid enough to burn it. The below pictures will make you cry…
As you can see this is a pretty big ivory pile which they just prepare to burn… My question is: what are those little packs among the ivory? They really look like those cocaine packs.. Very interesting! Did they wanted to burn some cocaine in fact and they used ivory as wood???

Mr. President himself is setting the fire there.. What a shame…
The ivory from Kenya looks really good…
I wonder what was the smell there?

And all is gone.. Congratulations!
